According to US secret services, however, Castro is believed to be close to death. He would succumb to his illness in the near future, US National Intelligence Director John Negroponte said in an interview with the Washington Post on Friday.

"Everything we see indicates it will not be much longer ... months, not years," Negroponte was quoted as saying. The 67-year old diplomat has acted as the first US head of all secret services in the administration of US President George W Bush since 2005.
